What’s Happening

When a door stops working – whether it won’t latch, won’t open, drags against the frame, or just doesn’t feel right anymore – the cause is almost always one of four things: a failed or shifted hinge, a frame that’s moved out of square, a latch or deadbolt that’s no longer aligned, or a door panel that has warped or swollen past the point of normal seasonal movement. Any of these is fixable. The question is which one you’re dealing with.

Call (903) 354-7134

A door that used to work and now doesn’t is telling you something changed – in the door itself, in the frame, or in the structure around it. None of those causes fix themselves. Left alone, a door that drags or won’t latch properly becomes a security gap, a weatherproofing failure, and eventually a bigger repair than it needed to be. The fastest way to know what you’re actually looking at is to have someone who installs doors every day take a look at it in person.

Why It Happens

The hinges have loosened or shifted

Hinges take the full weight of the door every single time it opens, and over years of use the screws back out, the hinge leaves bend slightly, or the wood around the mounting points compresses and gives. When this happens the door sags toward the latch side. You’ll often see a gap open up at the top of the latch side and the door will drag or scrape along the bottom of the frame on the hinge side. If you can grab the door at the latch edge and feel movement up and down, loose hinges are likely your answer.

The frame has moved out of square

Door frames are set into a rough opening in the wall, and that opening can shift – gradually, from foundation settling, wood shrinkage, or moisture getting into the framing. When the rough opening moves, the door frame moves with it, and a door that fit perfectly the day it was hung suddenly binds or won’t close flush. The tell is a consistent gap pattern: wider at one corner, tighter at the opposite one, like the whole frame has racked slightly to one side. This one is harder to see from the outside and usually needs a straight edge or a level to confirm.

The latch or deadbolt has fallen out of alignment

Strike plates – the metal piece in the frame that the latch or deadbolt seats into – are positioned for a door that’s hanging exactly where it was hung. Any movement in the door or frame shifts that relationship. You’ll notice the latch clicking but not catching, or the deadbolt requiring real force to throw. Sometimes you can see score marks on the strike plate from the bolt hitting just above or below the opening. This is often a symptom of another issue – hinge sag or frame movement – rather than a problem with the hardware itself.

The door panel has warped or swollen

Wood doors and some composite doors absorb moisture, especially at the bottom rail if a threshold seal has worn out. A door that binds only in humid months and loosens up in dry weather is a classic sign of seasonal swelling. A door that has permanently changed shape – bowing through the middle or twisting corner to corner – has warped. You can spot a bow by standing at the hinge side and looking down the face of the door like you’re sighting down a board. Permanent warping in a door panel generally means the door needs replacing rather than adjusting.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop forcing it. If the door is binding and you’re putting real shoulder into it to open or close it, stop. Forcing a misaligned door damages the frame, splits wood around hinge screws, and can crack a door panel. Use it gently or leave it in the open position until someone looks at it.
  • Check whether it locks. If the latch or deadbolt won’t engage, treat the door as unsecured. Don’t leave the home unattended with a door that won’t lock properly. If it’s an exterior door and you can’t secure it, call us at (903) 354-7134 right now – a real person will pick up.
  • Take a few photos before you touch anything. Photograph the gap pattern around the frame (top, both sides, bottom), the strike plate, and any visible scrape marks on the door edge or floor. These images help a technician understand what shifted and by how much before they arrive.
  • Check the hinges without tools. Look at each hinge while the door is closed. Are any hinge screws visibly backed out or missing? Is there a gap between the hinge leaf and the frame or the door edge? You can note this, but don’t try to drive screws into stripped holes yourself – the fix for stripped hinge screw holes is longer screws into solid framing or wood filler, not the same screw in the same hole.
  • Note when the problem started and whether anything changed. Recent heavy rain, a new concrete pour near the foundation, or a floor refinish are all things worth mentioning – they help a technician work through the likely cause faster.

How We Fix It

When your local Westlight Windows & Doors technician arrives, the first thing they do is work through the door the same way you’d read a diagnostic list: hinges first, then frame alignment, then hardware, then the door panel itself. They’ll open and close the door several times, check the gap pattern with a straightedge, and look at the hinge condition before touching anything.

From there, the path depends on what they find. Hinge and hardware problems – loose screws, a misaligned strike plate, a bent hinge leaf – are typically corrected during the same visit. Frame movement that’s taken the door out of square may require the door to be re-hung or shimmed to re-establish proper fit. A warped or failed panel points toward a full door replacement, which falls under our door installation service.

Whatever the finding, you’ll receive a written price before any work begins. That’s the first of the four Kingswell Guarantee promises, and it applies to every job, every time. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work after completion: if something isn’t right within the guarantee period, we come back and correct it at no charge, no negotiation required.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 5.0 from 5+ reviews

"Replaced eight drafty old windows that were basically single pane. The house is warmer already and the street noise is way down. Crew was on time both days and the price was exactly the quote."

- Harold Bemis

"Our energy bill in summer was brutal. New windows made a real dent in it. Salesman wasn't pushy and didn't do the fake "today only" discount thing the others tried."

- Bethany Oh

"Two bedroom windows that never opened and one that wouldn't stay up. All replaced in an afternoon. The crew was clean, hauled off the old frames, and the quote held."

- Colette Rhee
