PGT Impact Garage Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

PGT impact garage door replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $2,800 to $6,400 installed, depending on the door model, size, and whether you need a new track assembly. We stock PGT-compatible impact garage doors and most common replacement parts at our shop, and we can usually schedule the swap within a few days of your call. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover they need this when the door won’t stay closed after a wind event, or when they notice the impact-rated panel has a crack running through it after someone backed into it. If you’re reading this, you probably already know the sinking feeling: the door that was supposed to shrug off a Santa Ana gust season just gave up.

Here’s what we’ll cover: which PGT models this guide actually applies to, the real signs that your door is failing (not just making noise), what replacement genuinely costs in LA, and the one question you should ask yourself before grabbing a socket set.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT makes two impact garage door lines that show up in Los Angeles homes: the WinGuard series (their flagship impact door, aluminum frame with reinforced panels) and the Premier series (a heavier-gauge aluminum door with a higher design pressure rating). Both are Miami-Dade certified, which matters in LA because coastal and canyon-wind zones technically require impact-rated protection under California building code in certain fire and wind hazard zones. You’ll find the model number on a small aluminum tag riveted to the inside of the door, usually near the bottom panel on the left side. It’ll say something like PGT-WG-16 or PGT-PR-18. The number after the letters is the panel width in feet. That’s the compatibility gotcha: PGT panels are not interchangeable across series, and a WinGuard panel will not seat properly in a Premier track. We see people try this after buying a discounted panel online and it binds the rollers every time.

Westlight Windows & Doors is an independent service provider, not affiliated with PGT. We stock OEM PGT panels and doors, and we also carry quality aftermarket equivalents from CGI and CWS that match PGT’s dimension specs. Here’s the honest breakdown: aftermarket panels from a brand like CGI cost about 15 to 20 percent less than OEM PGT, and they carry the same Miami-Dade rating. If your goal is matching the original door’s finish exactly, OEM is the safer route because PGT’s powder coat color codes are proprietary. If you’re replacing a full door and want to save real money, a CWS impact door is a solid alternative we’ve installed across LA for years. Tell me what you need, and I’ll tell you what it actually costs.

Signs Your PGT Impact Garage Doors Is Failing

  • Visible cracking or spidering in a panel. Impact panels are laminated, so surface cracks usually mean the inner polycarbonate layer took a hit and the structural integrity is compromised. A cracked impact panel won’t pass a wind-load inspection.
  • The door jams halfway up and reverses. That’s almost always a bent track or a failed roller. On PGT doors, the reinforced rollers are heavier than standard ones, and when one seizes it can torque the track out of alignment fast.
  • Gaps between panels that weren’t there before. Panel hinges on impact doors carry more load than standard garage doors. When they stretch, the door loses its wind rating and leaks air along the seams. In Los Angeles, this shows up as dust coating everything in the garage after a windy week.
  • The door sags to one side when open. This points to a failing torsion spring or a cable that’s beginning to fray. On a standard door this is annoying. On a 400-plus-pound impact door, it’s dangerous.
  • You hear a pop or bang when the door closes. That’s often a panel delaminating internally. The outer skin separates from the impact core and makes noise under pressure. Once delamination starts, it spreads.

One more thing: if you hear any of these sounds and your torsion spring is more than seven years old, do not stand under the door while it moves. We’ll get to that.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a single-car PGT WinGuard door, most Los Angeles replacements land between $2,800 and $3,900 installed. A double-car Premier door runs $4,200 to $6,400 installed, depending on whether you need new tracks, new springs, and a new opener bracket. If you’re only replacing two or three damaged panels, that’s usually $600 to $1,100 per panel installed, including the hinge and roller refresh. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • Single panel replacement (WinGuard or Premier): $600-$1,100 installed
  • Full single-car impact door (PGT WinGuard): $2,800-$3,900 installed
  • Full double-car impact door (PGT Premier): $4,200-$6,400 installed
  • Track assembly replacement (both sides, if bent): $450-$800 added
  • Torsion spring replacement (high-cycle, impact-rated): $350-$600 installed

Every job we quote includes parts, labor, haul-away of the old door, and realignment. You get a written price before any work starts, and the price on that paper is the price you pay. If a repair fails during the guarantee period, we come back at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and Owen Satterfield has been putting it in writing since 2009.

DIY or Call Us?

If you want to inspect your PGT door yourself, here’s what’s safe: check the panel surfaces for cracks, look at the track for dents, and pull the manual release cord to test the door’s balance when it’s closed. That tells you a lot. What you should not touch is the torsion spring. PGT impact doors use high-tension springs under more load than a standard residential door because the panels are heavier. A torsion spring under full tension stores enough energy to cause serious injury if it lets go mid-adjustment. We’ve seen the result of DIY spring work and it’s not worth the $200 you’d save. Same goes for any track realignment under load.

If your door has a cracked panel or you suspect the spring has failed, call us at (903) 354-7134. We’ll send a technician who installs these doors every week, not once a year. The estimate is free, and the price gets written down before we touch a bolt.
