CGI Door Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
CGI door installation in Los Angeles typically runs $180-$420 for a full hinge, roller, or threshold replacement on an existing CGI door, with most jobs completed in a single visit. We stock the common CGI hinge sets, tandem rollers, and adjustable thresholds on our trucks, so we can usually match the part, quote a firm price, and finish the work the same day. Most owners discover the part has failed when the door starts dragging across the track, binding at the top corner, or rattling in the frame every time the Santa Ana winds pick up off the foothills.
Westlight Windows & Doors is an independent service provider. We install and service CGI doors, but we’re not a CGI corporate entity or factory warranty center. That independence matters: we match the right part to the job instead of forcing whatever a single manufacturer ships us.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI builds its residential door lines around three core series: the Estate Collection (aluminum frame, impact-rated), the Classic Collection (also impact-rated but with a thinner profile for tighter openings), and the Sentinel line, which is CGI’s Miami-Dade certified heavy-impact system. The hinge barrels, roller housings, and threshold caps are not interchangeable across all three lines. A Sentinel hinge pin is noticeably thicker than the Classic hinge pin, and the roller wheel diameter differs by roughly an eighth of an inch. If you swap in the wrong series part, the door will hang crooked and wear the track unevenly within a few months.
To identify what you have, look at the inside face of the door stile near the bottom corner. CGI stamps a small label there with the series name and a production date. If that label is gone, measure the roller wheel diameter: Classic runs 1-1/4 inch, Estate runs 1-3/8 inch, and Sentinel uses a 1-1/2 inch wheel with a stainless steel bracket. On the hinge side, count the leaves: Classic and Estate use a three-leaf hinge, while Sentinel uses a four-leaf hinge with a thicker pin. For OEM versus aftermarket, we recommend OEM CGI parts when the door is still under the CGI warranty window. Once that window expires, a quality aftermarket roller with sealed bearings often outlasts the original, especially in Los Angeles where dust off the 405 and moisture from coastal fog work on the bearings constantly.
We also stock compatible door installation parts for PGT, CWS, and ES Windows systems, so if your door turns out to be a PGT or CWS unit with a CGI-style track, we can still get you sorted.
Signs Your CGI Door Installation Is Failing
- The door drags or scrapes along the bottom track. The tandem roller wheels have flat-spotted from years of opening and closing, or the nylon wheel has worn down to the metal hub. Once the metal hub touches the aluminum track, it gouges the rail and the door starts to feel like it weighs twice as much.
- The door sticks at the top corner or requires force to close. The upper hinge leaf has loosened from the frame, or the hinge barrel itself has wallowed out. CGI doors are heavy, and a single loose hinge shifts the entire door slab downward by a few millimeters, which is enough to bind the strike side.
- You hear a grinding or clicking sound when the door moves. Dust and grit have worked into the roller bearings, or a roller has started to seize. Los Angeles air carries fine particulate that gets into the bearing races, especially near the freeways and in the Valley during wildfire season.
- The door rattles or shudders when the wind gusts. The threshold cap has compressed or cracked, or the top guide is worn. Impact-rated CGI doors are designed to hold up in high wind, but a loose guide lets the panel flex and slap the frame. We see this often in Sherman Oaks and Encino when the evening winds funnel down through the Sepulveda Pass.
- Water pools at the base of the door after rain. The threshold seal has failed or the adjustable riser has dropped out of alignment. Los Angeles roofs don’t always shed water the way the original design intended, and a failed threshold lets the first real rainstorm of the season find its way right into your entryway or laundry room.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what CGI door installation work in Los Angeles typically costs, parts and labor together:
| Part / Job | Installed Price Range |
|---|---|
| Single hinge replacement (one leaf set) | $60-$110 |
| Full hinge re-set (all hinges, door re-squared) | $180-$280 |
| Tandem roller replacement (both rollers) | $120-$220 |
| Complete roller + hinge overhaul (sliding door) | $280-$420 |
| Adjustable threshold replacement with seal | $90-$180 |
| Top guide and weather-strip replacement | $50-$100 |
What drives the range is door weight. A CGI Sentinel panel is heavier than a Classic panel, and a heavier door puts more demand on every roller and hinge. Older homes in neighborhoods like Mar Vista or Mid-City sometimes have non-standard rough openings, which adds time to square the frame before the new parts go in. Every job gets a written price before any work starts. No revised invoices at the door, no “we found something else while we were in there” without a conversation first. And if the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can check yourself without touching a tool. Run your hand along the bottom track and feel for gouges or flat spots. Look at the hinge screws and see if any are backing out of the frame. Check the threshold cap for cracks or gaps where light passes through. Those observations help you describe the problem accurately when you call.
What you should not do is remove a CGI door panel off its track. A full CGI impact door panel can weigh over 150 pounds, and the tension in the top guide and the torsion balance rod can release suddenly if you’re not braced for it. We’ve had more than one Los Angeles homeowner end up with a bruised shoulder and a door panel on the patio concrete trying to save a service call. The hinge pins are under constant load from the door’s own weight; pulling one out by hand while the door is still hanging is a good way to get a pin through your palm.
Call us at (903) 354-7134. We’ll tell you what the likely repair is, what it costs, and when a technician can get there. Owen Satterfield has spent enough years on CGI doors to tell you the part number from a description, and enough years in Los Angeles to know that a sliding door that won’t slide is a daily aggravation you don’t need to live with.
FAQs
CGI door rollers and hinges typically last 8-12 years in the Los Angeles climate before needing replacement, depending on proximity to salt air and the amount of wind exposure the door gets. Coastal homes in Playa del Rey and Redondo Beach see faster bearing wear from salt, while homes in the inland valleys see more dust-related hinge wear. Your written estimate from Westlight includes a straight answer on how much life is left in the parts we’re not replacing.
Hinges and thresholds can sometimes be repaired if the wear is minor and caught early; rollers almost always need replacement once they start grinding or wobbling. The steel pin inside a CGI roller is not serviceable on its own, and once the nylon wheel is worn unevenly, there is no practical way to re-true it. We’ll tell you honestly which one you have and give you a firm price before any work starts; call (903) 354-7134 to schedule a look.
A typical CGI hinge or roller replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes from start to finish, including squaring the door and testing the full travel. If the threshold also needs replacing, add another 30 minutes. We show up in the window we gave you, and we leave the door tracking straight and quiet before the technician pulls out of the driveway.
We stock the most common CGI hinge sets, tandem rollers, and threshold caps for the Classic, Estate, and Sentinel series on our trucks at all times. If your door needs a less common part, we can usually have it in hand within two business days. Call (903) 354-7134 and describe what the door is doing; we’ll tell you what we carry and what it costs before anyone shows up.
