PGT Door Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

PGT door installation in Los Angeles typically runs $1,800 to $4,600 installed, depending on the slab style, impact-rating requirements, and what’s involved in the opening itself. We stock PGT-compatible hardware and seals on the truck, and most straightforward slab swaps go in within a day once the door is on site. The way most LA homeowners find out they need us is not dramatic. A door that scrapes when it should glide, a handle that jiggles loose, a threshold that has worn through its weatherstrip. What starts as an annoyance becomes a door that won’t lock cleanly or seal out the June gloom.

Westlight Windows & Doors is an independent installer, not a PGT dealership. That matters in one specific way: we’re not tied to a single product line when the better answer is a different one. We carry eight manufacturer lines, PGT among them, so the recommendation you get is the one that fits the house and the budget. Owen Satterfield’s rule on the job applies here too: tell me what you need, and I’ll tell you what it actually costs.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT’s door lineup spans three families we regularly install across Los Angeles: the WinGuard series (impact-rated for coastal and hillside wind zones), the SpectraGuard line, and their standard sliding and hinged patio doors. Each series uses different interlock profiles, threshold heights, and roller assemblies. That last one catches people: a PGT sliding door from the SpectraGuard line will not accept a WinGuard roller carriage without modification. The track gauge is the same, but the roller housing height differs by roughly 3/16 of an inch. We match parts by the series sticker on the door edge or by measuring the existing roller assembly against the track, not by guessing from a photograph.

For OEM versus aftermarket: PGT’s factory hardware carries the longest track record, but quality aftermarket equivalents from the same suppliers that serve the Florida impact market often match or beat OEM pricing by 20 to 30 percent. We stock both, and we’ll tell you which one makes sense for your particular door. If the door is under warranty, we always flag that first: your PGT warranty may cover the part, and we can handle the labor side of the claim so you’re not stuck navigating paperwork.

Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing

  • The door drags or binds when you slide it. Roller assemblies on PGT sliders carry the door’s full weight, and over five to eight years the sealed bearings wear flat in spots. What you feel is the door catching on those worn spots every revolution. Los Angeles dust accelerates this; those fine particles work into the bearing and act like grinding compound.
  • You can see daylight under the door at one corner. This is usually the adjustable threshold plate or the bottom sweep having compressed past its useful life. On impact-rated PGT doors, that gap also compromises the water rating, which matters during January’s heavier rain stretches.
  • The handle has vertical play or fails to engage the strike cleanly. The internal lock mechanism in PGT multi-point hardware is a steel gear that strips under repeated torque. Once stripped, the door may “lock” but not actually engage the top and bottom bolts, leaving you with a false sense of security.
  • The panel feels heavier than it used to. PGT impact doors are inherently weighty, but if the glide has gone stiff, you’re now fighting the full mass of an impact-rated slab on degraded rollers. That added strain shortens the life of everything downstream: the rollers, the track, and even the handle hardware.
  • Condensation appears between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit’s seal has failed. This is not repairable in place; the IGU must be replaced. On PGT WinGuard doors, the glass is part of the structural impact system, so replacement must match the original impact rating and laminated configuration.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote across Los Angeles for PGT door work, broken down as line items so there’s no mystery:

  • Sliding door roller replacement: $260-$480 per panel, including OEM or aftermarket rollers, track cleaning, and re-alignment.
  • Complete threshold replacement: $340-$610, depending on door width and whether the adjustable sill plate needs grinding to match the existing frame.
  • Multi-point lock assembly replacement: $390-$720, including hardware, strike adjustment, and lubrication of all engagement points.
  • IGU (insulated glass unit) replacement on PGT impact door: $900-$2,400, driven by glass size and whether it’s laminated impact-rated glass. This is not a windshield repair; the full sash typically comes out and gets re-glazed on site or in the shop.
  • Full PGT door slab swap (existing frame, new panel): $1,800-$4,600, including hardware transfer or replacement, new threshold where needed, and full weather sealing.

Every quote is written before any work starts, and it does not change at the door. That’s part of the Kingswell Guarantee we’ve operated under since 2009. If the repair fails within the guarantee period, we return and correct it at no charge. No phone-call renegotiation, no invoice amendments. Just the written price we gave you.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things are safe to check yourself: whether the track is visibly caked with debris, whether the weatherstrip at the bottom edge is torn, whether the handle screws are loose enough to tighten with a screwdriver. Those are inspection items, not repairs. Beyond that, PGT doors are heavy, spring-balanced, and often glass-heavy enough that a slipped panel can do real damage to you or the floor. An impact-rated WinGuard slab can weigh north of 200 pounds. Adjusting the rollers on a door like that without the right lift blocks and a second set of hands is how people lose fingers. We do not say that as a scare tactic; we say it because our technicians have rehung enough doors after well-meaning attempts to know exactly where those projects go sideways.

The sensible path: check what you can see, note it down, and call (903) 354-7134. We’ll give you a price range before anyone shows up, which is more than most callers expect.
