Therma-Tru Impact Garage Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Therma-Tru-compatible impact garage doors across Los Angeles, with most complete door replacements running $2,800 to $6,400 installed depending on size, series, and whether we’re swapping just the door or the full track-and-spring assembly too. Most owners discover a failing Therma-Tru impact door one of two ways: either the door starts binding mid-travel with a grinding sound you can’t ignore, or the bottom panel shows rust bloom along the reinforcement rails after a few wet winters. The good news is we keep common Therma-Tru drop-in parts on our trucks, and we’ll give you a written price before we touch anything.

Key Takeaways:

  • Therma-Tru impact garage doors in Los Angeles typically run $2,800-$6,400 installed for a full door
  • We’re an independent Kingswell location, not a Therma-Tru dealer, which means we match parts across eight manufacturer lines
  • Every job gets a written price first, a real arrival window, and a written guarantee on the completed work
  • Call (903) 354-7134 and a live person answers, 24/7, not a recording

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru’s impact garage door line splits into two families: the Classic-Craft carriage-house series and the Fiber-Classic flush-panel series, both built around a fiberglass skin over a steel core. The compatibility gotcha most Los Angeles homeowners run into is that Therma-Tru changed hinge spacing on doors manufactured after 2016, so a hinge set ordered by door width alone will bolt up wrong on the older panels. Our techs read the manufacturer label on the door’s interior edge before ordering anything; if that label is gone, we measure hinge-to-hinge spacing and match it against both vintages.

We stock both OEM Therma-Tru components and select aftermarket equivalents. For the panel skins and hinge assemblies, we insist on OEM; the aftermarket fiberglass doesn’t match Therma-Tru’s UV-stable gel coat, and in Los Angeles sun that matters. For track rollers, cable drums, and weatherstripping, we carry quality aftermarket parts that outlast the originals, and we’ll tell you which is which and why before you pay for either. If your door predates 2010, we’ll do a quick spec check because some early Fiber-Classic doors used non-standard roller stems.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Impact Garage Door Is Failing

  • Grinding or chattering during travel. This usually means the nylon roller bearings have worn flat. Once the roller stops spinning, it drags along the track and shaves metal off both. Ignored long enough, the door starts hopping and stresses the opener.
  • Door sits crooked when closing. A door that drops one side first almost always has a torque imbalance in the springs. It’s not the panel’s fault. The spring set is tired, and forcing it closed will warp the bottom panel over time.
  • Bottom panel rust bloom at the seams. Therma-Tru’s impact doors use galvanized internal rails, but the fasteners at the panel joints can wick moisture after the factory seal breaks down. In Los Angeles’ coastal zones, we see this at year six or seven, earlier in Pacific Palisades or Playa del Rey with more salt air.
  • Door shudders and reverses on the way down. This is usually the safety sensor or the opener’s force setting fighting a door that’s gained resistance. It can also be a broken cable strand catching in the drum. If you see a frayed cable, stop using the door and call us.
  • Visible delamination on the panel face. The fiberglass skin begins to separate from the steel core, showing as a bubble or a soft spot. Once moisture gets between those layers, the panel loses its impact rating. That’s a replacement, not a patch job.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles homes, a complete Therma-Tru impact garage door replacement runs $2,800 to $6,400 installed. The spread comes down to door size, series, and insulation level. A single 16×7 Fiber-Classic door with standard R-6 insulation lands around $2,800 to $3,600. A 16×8 Classic-Craft with R-12 insulation and decorative hardware typically runs $4,800 to $5,800. If we’re also replacing track, springs, and cables, factor another $600 to $1,100.

Every quote includes the door, hardware, labor, haul-away of the old door, and disposal. We write the price before any work begins, and that price doesn’t change at the door. The Kingswell Guarantee covers the installation work, and if a repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back and correct it at no charge. No negotiation required, no phone tree to chase. That’s the deal, in writing.

Scope Typical Los Angeles Installed Price
16×7 Fiber-Classic door, standard insulation $2,800 - $3,600
16×7 Classic-Craft door, upgraded insulation $3,400 - $4,400
16×8 Classic-Craft, R-12 insulation, hardware $4,800 - $5,800
Full track, spring, and cable replacement $600 - $1,100 additional
Single panel replacement (when available) $700 - $1,400

DIY or Call Us?

Some things are safe to check yourself. You can inspect the weatherstripping along the sides and bottom, tighten the occasional loose hinge bolt, and clear debris from the track with the door in manual release. You can visually inspect the cables and springs without touching them. That’s where safe DIY ends on a Therma-Tru impact door.

The torsion springs on these doors carry enormous tension; a snapped spring can take off a finger or worse. We never recommend a homeowner touch springs, cables, or the bottom bracket bolts on an impact door, and most panel replacements require a second set of hands plus lifting equipment because Therma-Tru impact panels run 160 to 210 pounds each. This is not a Saturday afternoon project. If the door is off its line or a spring looks stretched, call (903) 354-7134 and we’ll send a uniformed, background-checked tech who has done this hundreds of times.
